(5 Oct 2019) Demonstrators were on Saturday once again marching through the streets of Hong Kong, many wearing face masks in defiance of a new ban.
After widespread overnight arson attacks, looting, fighting with police and beatings, Hong Kong’s embattled leader called on the public to swing behind the government in condemning the increasingly violent protests.
In a pre-recorded televised address broadcast Saturday as protesters began marching, a solemn Carrie Lam defended the legality of the ban criminalizing the wearing of masks at rallies.
She did not announce additional measures to quell increasingly violent protests.
All subway and train services are closed in Hong Kong after another night of rampaging violence that the new ban on face masks failed to quell.
