(8 Oct 2019) Turkish-backed Syrian forces from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) have been training near the Syrian northern town of Azaz, in preparation for an anticipated Turkish incursion into Syria.
Dozens of fighters took part in the military manoeuvres which took place on Monday.
US-backed Kurdish-led forces said American troops began pulling back on Monday from positions along the border in northeast Syria ahead of an expected Turkish invasion the Syrian Kurds say will overturn five years of achievements in the battle against the Islamic State group.
The US President Donald Trump later cast his decision to abandon the Kurdish fighters in Syria as fulfilling a campaign promise to withdraw from “endless war” in the Middle East, even as Republican critics and others said he was sacrificing a US ally and undermining American credibility.
