(8 Oct 2019) UK police have arrested 13 men for allegedly smuggling 50 tonnes of drugs, worth millions of pounds (US dollars) into the country, in UK’s “biggest ever drug conspiracy.”
Following a series of dawn raids across Britain, officers from the National Crime Agency arrested the suspects, believed to be the UK arm of a well-established organised crime group that used Dutch and British front companies to import heroin, cocaine and cannabis.
According to the NCA, the arrested individuals are part of the biggest drug smuggling gang they have ever uncovered.
“Our main threat and priority is to stop those drugs, prevent them from coming to the country because once they come into the country a lot of vulnerable individuals, particularly children are being used to distribute those drugs,” said Jayne Lloyd, NCA Regional Head of Investigations
The confiscated drugs were smuggled into the country in lorries carrying vegetables and juices from the Netherlands, over 18 months.
