President Donald Trump launched an outspoken attack on Emmanuel Macron ahead of their meeting in London, calling the French President’s comment last month that American indifference to the alliance is leading to the “brain death of NATO” — “very insulting” and “nasty”.
But Trump also railed against the alliance, complaining that the US pays “a disproportionate amount,” saying “nobody needs NATO more than France” and that the country that “benefits really the least is the United States.”
“When France makes a statement like they did about NATO, it’s a very dangerous statement to make,” Trump said Tuesday morning ahead of a working breakfast with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“Nobody needs NATO more than France,” Trump went on to say. “Frankly the one that benefits really the least is the United States.”
